Why these metrics matter
Followers: the reach ceiling, not the floor
Follower count tells you the maximum addressable audience for one of a creator's videos. It does not tell you how many of those followers actually watch, comment or act. A 2M-follower generalist often delivers fewer real conversions than a 200k-follower niche creator with an engaged audience, because most of the big account is inactive or geographically wrong for the brand.
Engagement rate: how alive the audience actually is
Engagement rate divides total interactions (likes + comments + shares) by followers, then expresses it as a percentage. On TikTok, 4-8% is strong for a mid-tier creator and 1.5-4% is typical; under 1.5% is soft and worth investigating before pitching. Smaller creators routinely beat mega-creators on this metric — which is exactly why side-by-side comparison catches the better buy.
Audience country: matching the buyer, not the creator
A creator who lives in Los Angeles can have a majority-Brazil audience and have no idea. If your product only ships to the US, that creator is a 0% buy at any follower count. The top audience country and its percentage share is the single fastest disqualifier — read it first, then read the rest.
Authenticity score: the bot-and-bought-followers tell
KOLens computes a composite authenticity score from several signals (engagement pattern, comment quality, follower velocity, and more). A creator labelled "Authentic" with high confidence is a safer buy than one labelled "Mixed signals" even at the same follower count. Use it as a tiebreaker when two creators look similar on the other metrics.
Why smaller creators often win on cost-per-result
A 250k-follower creator with 6% engagement delivers 15k interactions per video. A 2.5M-follower creator with 1% delivers 25k — only 1.7x as many interactions for ~10x the follower count, and usually ~5-8x the sticker price. Run a side-by-side on both before you book either, and let the engagement rate arrow tell you which one to pitch first.
Frequently asked
- How do I compare two TikTok creators?
- Paste each creator's @handle (or TikTok URL) into the two boxes above and hit Compare. KOLens pulls each creator's public stats from our snapshot database and shows them side-by-side, with an orange triangle marking which side wins on each metric (followers, engagement rate, average views, audience country share, authenticity score, last post). Comparison covers TikTok creators with 100k+ followers — anyone below that threshold isn't in the public snapshot yet.
- Is followers the right metric to compare?
- Followers tells you reach ceiling, not how a campaign will actually perform. A 200k-follower creator with a 7% engagement rate routinely beats a 2M-follower generalist with a 1.5% rate on cost-per-result, because the smaller creator's audience actually watches, comments and acts. Always read engagement rate, audience country mix and authenticity alongside follower count — never in isolation.
- What does engagement rate tell me?
- Engagement rate is total interactions (likes + comments + shares) divided by either followers or views, expressed as a percentage. It's the single fastest tell for whether a creator's audience is real and active. On TikTok, a follower-based rate of 4-8% is strong for a mid-tier creator; under 1.5% is soft regardless of follower count. The comparison tool surfaces the higher of the two rates with an accent so you can spot the more engaged creator at a glance.
- How do I know which creator's audience matches my brand?
- Look at the top audience country and the percentage share. A creator with 62% US viewers is a very different buy from one with 18% US and 41% Brazil, even at the same follower count. KOLens shows the top country and its percentage for each side so you can rule out audience-mismatch creators before pricing them. - Can I compare more than two creators at once?
- This free tool is two-up only. For a real shortlist — comparing 10, 50 or 200 creators across the same metrics with sorting and CSV export — sign up to KOLens. The paid product lets you build creator lists, run side-by-side comparisons of full shortlists, and export to Excel for your team.
- Is this comparison free?
- Yes. The two-creator side-by-side comparison is free with no signup. We compute it from KOLens's public snapshot of TikTok creators with 100k+ followers. If you want to pull engagement and audience data for a creator that isn't in our snapshot yet, sign up free and queue them for a scan.
